The University Church of St Mary, the Virgin is located in the heart of Oxford and has played a key role in the history of Oxford University and religion in Oxford.

From the 13th Century, the University Church was used as an official building for Oxford University. The university congregation met there from 1252, in the ground floor (now the Vaults cafe). From the early 13th Century it was used to award degrees and ceremonies.

Later the University, built the purpose built Sheldonian Theatre, allowing the church to be only used for religious events.
